The RIBA-chartered practice, located in Ilkley, was founded 13 years ago by talented and experienced architects, Chris and Cathy Hunt, attracting wide praise and recommendations for their skill in delivering ambitious projects. Chris & Cathy are known for exceptional design, expert technical drawing, knowledge of Planning issues and Building Regulations and their friendly approach.

Niche Design’s wide-ranging portfolio spans Leeds, Bradford, Skipton, Harrogate, Ilkley, Otley, Keighley, Wetherby, the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. The 40 years’ combined architectural experience of Chris and Cathy brings with it expertise in conservation areas, listed buildings, and sustainability

Our team

Chris Hunt

BA (Hons), M Arch (Dist), ARB, RIBA

Before setting up Niche Design in 2010, Chris held senior roles at architectural practices in the North and South East, working in all sectors. Chris was also Design Manager for an award winning residential development company. Chris has previously been a part time lecturer/tutor in Architecture at Nottingham Trent University and was for a number of years a Parish Councillor chairing the Planning Committee Meetings. Outside of work Chris is an enthusiastic road cyclist who likes to point out that he was riding long before it became cool!

Catherine Hunt

BA (Hons), M Arch, PGCE, ARB, RIBA

Cathy has practised with a number of respected firms around the UK on a range of projects including University projects, community buildings and high specification residential schemes. Cathy also retrained and worked as a Design Technology teacher for a number of years prior to coming back to Architecture when she joined Niche Design in 2013. Over the past two years, Cathy has focused her continuing professional development by specialising in the retrofit of existing buildings, achieving certification for completing the Carbonlite Retrofit Foundation Course and Retrofit Co-ordination Course from the Association for Environment Conscious Building.  She is also an AECB certifier for the AECB Carbonite retrofit standards.

Outside of work Cathy enjoys playing the piano and is a recent convert to cycling.

James Mumby

BA Hons Architecture

With over 20 years experience, Jim has contributed as lead designer towards numerous award winning buildings across all sectors. With a keen focus on design excellence and precise detailing, projects have varied from small scale residential through to masterplanning of large scale theme parks, leading the design from conception to completion. In addition to Jim’s artistic and creative input, he maintains a keen interest in photography and music developing his own website, regularly writing reviews and attending concerts in support of the local music scene

With 5 years of office experience, Jasper has kept our mental health and wellbeing on track, with regular walks and stick throwing.  He also takes an enthusiastic approach to a zero waste policy, ensuring no food goes in the bin.
